Let Asheville Sweep You Off Your Feet: Asheville NC Part 3: Deep Love and Companionship. In Other Words, Tupelo Honey Cafe, Beer & Moonshine

Today comes the last installment of my trip to Asheville, NC. You can read part 1 {First Date} and part 2 {Thrill, Infatuation & Romance} if you haven't done so yet. But no worries: there will be no quiz at the end. I just want to make sure you learn about places, experiences and food I've enjoyed.

And just so that you are not confused, a little reminder: I came up with an idea for how to summarize my Asheville trip: I'll write about it as a progression of a romantic relationship. The first date; the thrill, infatuation and romance; and finally the deep love and companionship.

This was my second time to Tupelo Honey Cafe. On my first trip to Asheville, I had lunch there before flying back to DC and loved sitting at the bar, checking out the other eaters and fell in love with Tupelo Honey Cafe's fried pickles.

Tupelo Honey Cafe is the perfect place for your weekend brunch, once you force yourself to get out of bed. You can come there with your now significant other and eventually bring your kids there. It's a loud, colorful and gimmick-free restaurant. What you get is solid food, friendly service, and a full stomach. You can also buy their cookbook in hopes of recreating some of your favorite dishes at home.

As this was a media trip, the trip was paid for by the Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau, we got a taste of at least 12 different dishes and shared the table with Chef Brian. I don't know how I could possibly choose my favorite!

I was impressed by the sweet potato pancakes because that's not what I would normally order. They were light, fluffy and not overly sweet. Also, the Not Your Mama's Meatloaf was surprisingly light despite the fact that it had bacon in it and came with a side of mac-n-cheese. But not to worry: there was grilled asparagus to garnish the plate.

And then there was Brian's Shrimp and Grits. Ooh la la! These were not your ordinary grits: they were loaded with goat cheese and topped with a spicy red pepper sauce. Divine.

Needless to say, we could not finish all of our food. I'm looking forward to revisiting Tupelo Honey Cafe by making the recipes from its book in my own kitchen.

While in Asheville we got a chance to meet business owners who are passionate about their businesses, communities and families. Two such people were Oscar Wong, the owner of Highland Brewing Company, and Troy Ball, the owner of Troy & Sons Distillery.

Asheville is famous for its beer, and not being a huge beer lover, I was a bit nervous. The sweet smell of brewing beer, however, completely and utterly intoxicated me as soon as I stepped into the Highland Brewing Company. Is that what falling in love feels like?

"What's in a beer?

Our beers are just like us, a wee bit different. Few of our beers fall into categories, so we don't have the most medals or the biggest brag book. But we believe each beer is excellent. We believe each beer has a personality - and personalities like ours don't always fit in categories. My favorite was the Razor Wit Belgian Wheat or "white" ale. It was light, refreshing and perfect for a hot summer day.

We got to tour the plant and learn about how the beer is made. Below are a few of the fun photographs I snapped.

Across the hallway from the Highland Brewing Company is the Troy & Sons Distillers. That's where we met Troy, who is a beautiful woman with a passion for moonshine. Who would have ever guessed? In fact, her face is the face of the company and graces all of their advertisement. Troy and her husband started the business after receiving one too many bad samples of moonshine as housewarming gifts when they moved to Asheville, and the business has grown and received great press from not only industry insiders but also quite a few celebrities.

Troy and her husband, Charlie, gave a bottle of moonshine to each of us and I can't wait for mine to be shipped to me {was too scared takingn it on the plane with me.} You can learn more about their story and their other contributors here.  Although I'm not planning on drinking the moonshine straight up, it will be great mixed into drinks. Thank you, guys!!!

Of course I did not cover every single restaurant I visited and every single artisan I met on the trip: these are just some of the most memorable highlights. I'm guessing I'll be back to Asheville for more of its beauty, generosity and community spirit soon. Maybe by that time their salsa scene will even grow ;)

I hope you've enjoyed these travel posts!

Let Asheville Sweep You Off Your Feet: Asheville NC Part 2. Thrill, Infatuation & Romance. In Other Words, Zip Lining, Jonas Gerard & The Biltmore Estate

This might be the longest blog post title ever on Mango & Tomato!
If you missed my previous post, make sure to read Let Asheville Sweep You Off Your Feet: Asheville NC Part 1. First Date. And just so that you are not confused, a little reminder: I came up with an idea for how to summarize my Asheville trip: I'll write about it as a progression of a romantic relationship. The first date; the thrill, infatuation and romance; and finally the deep love and companionship.

I left you last with a write up of a perfect first date: champagne and appetizers followed by a fun dinner of tapas and sangria ending on a sweet note with espuma de chocolate: chocolate mousse, raspberry sorbet and hazelnut praline.
Maybe there was even a kiss involved!

As the relationship takes off, you welcome new experiences, adventures, and romantic settings.

Not being an outdoorsy or sporty girl, when I heard that I'll have a chance to ZIP LINE, I almost fainted. My mom asked if I really had to do it. Of course not, but I decided to push my sense of adventure and go beyond my boundaries and comfort zone.

Luckily, everyone at the Navitat Canopy was knowledgeable, friendly and enthusiastic and tried to put me at ease as much as possible.

The views were breath taking. Green trees, blue sky, a light breeze...and then there were all those ropes, knots, cables, bridges, etc. I kept on reminding myself to BREATH.

We started with a few trial zip lines before moving on to longer ones. And guess what? I did just fine! The whole experience went by almost too quickly even though it lasted about three hours. And now I can say that I zip lined just like the Real Housewives of OC, but with no drama ;) {Unfortunately I could not take my big camera with me for the fear of loosing it, so all the pictures from zip lining experience were taken with my little point and shoot.}

Other than zip lining, we also crossed a few bridges (see below), learned how to repel, and were educated on the types of trees, flowers, and mushrooms surrounding us.

Another activity that I think would be fun to do with someone you are dating is visiting museums or, even better, artists' studios. On my first trip to Asheville, I took a tour of the River Art District and fell in love with the work of Jonas Gerard. Imagine my excitmenet when I learned that I'll get to meet him in person and sit through one of his demonstrations!! I could not believe my luck.

Jonas Gerard's art is bright, colorful, strong and makes me think of the Cuban music he listens to while he paints. It shows his passion for life, beauty and intuition.

The painting on the left is the one I've been dreaming about for the last year, but alast it's a bit too pricey for me ;)

From Jonas:
The essence of abstract art is:
To unfold the spirit of self-exploration by painting freely without restraint or criticism.
To develop a deeper trust in one's intuition and instinct as they happen.
To realize that letting go of set goals opens up a whole world of infinite possibilities.

And then right before Jonas started his demonstration, he decided to paint on ME!!!! {Notice the arrow that points to my cleavage.}

My expression on the photo above is priceless! :)

I'll be honest with you, I was hoping Jonas would just gift me the painting above, which took him less than ten minutes to complete, but no such thing. Instead, I bought one of his smaller prints and can't wait to frame it and find a place for it in my condo.

My last idea for a thrilling and romantic date in Asheville is the visit to the Biltmore. I did not get a chance to visit this mansion on my first visit and loved the architectural private tour we got to take.

"George Vanderbilt created Biltmore as an escape from everyday life. A visit to the 8,000-acre estate in the mountains of Asheville, North Carolina provides limitless fun.
Explore Biltmore House & Gardens and the Antler Hill Village—featuring the Winery, The Biltmore Legacy, Village Green, and Farm.
Play in our backyard with an array of outdoor activities, indulge in one-of-a-kind shopping, and savor our restaurants' exceptional fare. Visit Biltmore in the Blue Ridge Mountains of Asheville, NC and let our gracious hospitality inspire you."
Although we weren't allowed to take photographs inside, the outside of the estate provided countless opportunities.

Supposedly this brings you luck ;)

These are the views of the Biltmore from far away: how romantic is that?

Stay tuned for the last installation of this series that I'll share next week! For now, have a great weekend and try to stay cool: it's going to be 100 degrees in DC. Oy.
Disclaimer: the trip was paid for by the Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau including my flights, stay at The Grove Park Inn and all the eating out and sightseeing adventures. I was under no obligation to write about any of it.

Let Asheville Sweep You Off Your Feet: Asheville NC Part 1. First Date.

When I don't travel, I get restless. I need something exciting and fun and new to look forward to.
That's just how I am.

Last October I booked a flight and room at a fancy Hotel Indigo and headed to Asheville, North Carolina. I knew little about the city, but was able to build an itinerary of eating out, checking out the local art scene and just walking around. I loved the quaint downtown, the friendly people, incredibly fresh food and the art of Jonas Gerard. I knew I'd want to be back.

Then earlier this month I received an email from Del of the Explore Asheville inviting me to join three other bloggers on a fun weekend trip to Asheville. I could not believe my luck, and happily said yes. Now for the disclaimer: the trip was completely paid for by the Asheville Convention and Visitors Bureau including my flights, stay at The Grove Park Inn and all the eating out and sightseeing adventures. I was under no obligation to write about any of it, but how could I not? I had an amazing weekend of very little sleep but experiences that stretched my sense of adventure, let me revisit a few of my favorite places in Asheville, have Jonas Gerard paint my body (!!!), and meet people who are passionate about what they do and want to share it with their community.

I took over 600 photos, but don't want to overwhelm you with them all. As I was trying to fall asleep a few nights ago, I came up with an idea for how to summarize my trip: I'll write about it as a progression of a romantic relationship. The first date, the thrill, infatuation and romance, and finally the deep love and companionship.

Ready? Let's go!

It's important to set the right tone/mood on the first date. You want to be relaxed, yet slightly nervous and full of anticipation. Coffee dates are boring, so why not meet up for a drink and some snacks?
Battery Park Book Exchange & Champagne Bar is the perfect place for that. You can walk around and browse stacks of books, discuss your favorite authors and genres, pet a friendly dog next to a couple sipping champagne and then sit on incredibly comfortable couches and order some bubbly!

This place has over 60,000 books and 80 wines: rest assured you will not be bored or thirsty!

I don't know about you, but I need snacks when there is alcohol involved. If you are having a good time with your date and his/her hands are clean, order a few dishes to share!

The cheese plate featured at least four varieties of cheese, marinated olives and jam. It was served with a bowl of various crackers and I swooned over the pretty board with metal accents. We also ordered a smoked trout dip: I had to stop myself from licking the bowl.

If after sharing the cheese board and finishing up the champagne you are still interested in spending some time with your date, head over to Curate! I had brunch at Curate on my first visit to Asheville, and was looking forward to checking out their dinner menu.

While you get comfortable and start scanning the menu, make sure to look around and notice how calm everyone is in the open kitchen. No one is yelling, running around or panicking. Also, check out the beautiful light fixtures, a big planter on the wall and the exposed ceiling. It's definitely the type of place where romance can bloom.

You can order charcuterie & cheese, something from the fryer, soups & salads, sautes, and finish off with desserts and coffee. The menu, as well as the knowledgeable servers, will guide you.

We sampled at least fifteen dishes, but I will highlight my favorites.

Alcachofas fritas: Jerusalem artichoke chips with sherry reduction and savory yogurt dip.

White sangria

pan con tomate: toasted bread with fresh tomato & olive oil and manchego cheese. We were warned not to fill up on this, but how could I not?

tabla de embutidos: traditional Spanish charcuterie with lomo and cabecero iberico de bellota, fuet and chorizo palacios

brandada de bacalao: traditional cod & potato puree served hot with crisp bread

Of course we also had dessert! My favorite was espuma de chocolate: chocolate mousse, raspberry sorbet and hazelnut praline.

It was a sweet way to end the night.

If this was a date, I'd say it was a major success! Stay tuned for part two of my Asheville experience: thrill, infatuation and romance.

Eating out in Asheville, NC: French Broad Chocolate Lounge & The Gourmet Chip Company (Sweet & Salty)

Happy Wednesday! I'm pretty sure this is the last full Asheville post you will find on my blog (unless I take another trip to the lovely city). Are you glad? I'll be back to recipe posting very, very soon: I promise.

Here's a question for you: what do you like as snacks? Are you a savory girl/boy and tend to pick up potato chips, pistachios, or maybe Cheetos? Or do you crave chocolate, ice cream and cake?

While in Asheville, I satisfied both my sweet and savory sides at two establishments: French Broad Chocolate Lounge and Gourmet Chip Company.

Let's start in a chronological order. I woke up, putzed around a bit {that's my friend Jenny's word!!} and then had a great brunch at Curate. What followed was some walking around, shopping, photo taking, and then I needed a snack.

Ever since I told Robyn that I'll be going to Asheville, she told me that I MUST go to French Broad Chocolate Lounge: and that's exactly what I did.

The name comes from the French Broad river that passes through Asheville: it's a great reflection of the communal feel of the lounge. The menu is written on a large chalk board, there are the most comfortable leather chairs, leather couches and one big communal table. The place was filled with couples, moms and their kids, families, and a few singles like me.

This is a family run place. The owners, Jael and Dan are self taught: "Self-guided, never-ending chocolate education – from textbooks, cookbooks, chef friends, online classes, cacao farms of Costa Rica, culinary tours throughout United States and Central America, and of course, in the kitchen. (nope, they didn’t attend culinary school)."

I've had a chance to try a few of the truffles from French Broad Chocolate Lounge at my hotel, and although the flavors were definitely creative, they just weren't my cup of tea. I prefer dark chocolate with maybe an addition of nuts or fruit. So for my dessert I chose a chocolate raspberry cheesecake with a nut crust and a glass of hibiscus iced tea.

I sat on a couch, caught up with my reading and indulged in the smooth texture of the cheesecake and the refreshing ice tea. This was a perfect mid afternoon snack.

I left the French Broad Lounge and headed back to the hotel. On the way back, however, I ran into a family that looked familiar. Turns out they were in the same airport as I was waiting for the flight to Asheville. For some reason, I decided to say hi. That's not my typical behavior: my mom is the one who typically chats up anyone and everyone. Turns out, that family was from Washington DC and was visiting their relatives in Asheville. When they found out that I was into food and food photography, they said I HAD TO visit their sister-in-law's The Gourmet Chip Company. Who was I to say no?

This place sells GOURMET chips made from regular potatoes, purple sweet potatoes, plantains and taro roots. The chips are topped with everything from chocolate, to blue cheese and red wine. I was intrigued.

Alas, Gourmet Chip Company doesn't have a sampler. I ended up ordering The Cajun: Sweet Potato Crisps with smokey, sweet & spicy topping. The chips were made directly in front of me, topped with the secret mix of seasoning and some lime juice. They had quite a kick to them and were surprisingly not greasy. Since I was still pretty full from the cheesecake, I saved half of the chips for the next day, and they still were crispy!

The picture above on the right is of The Parisian: a woman sitting next to me asked if I'd like to try it, and I happily obliged, offering her a few of my chips. The Parisian had rosemary, thyme, goat cheese, white truffle spritz and sea salt. It was divine. These chips would be great for big parties...even something as fancy as a wedding!

Where do YOU snack when you are on vacation? Do you take advice of almost-strangers on where to eat? Please chime in!
