What's new at Bourbon Steak? I shoot for food.

Earlier this month, my friend Sangeetha, who does PR for Bourbon Steak, amongst a zillion other amazing restaurants in DC area, asked if I would like to come to Bourbon Steak, take a few photographs of the new items on the menu and be treated to a lunch for two in return.

Since Sangeetha and I have known each other for a few years, I felt no need to wait more than a few minutes before saying YES.

And so, a few Fridays ago, on the Veterans Day, I woke up after a night of salsa dancing, managed to shower, put on clothes and a bit of makeup and headed out to Bourbon Steak in Georgetown.

{Here are a few of my other visits to Bourbon Steak.}
Before I turn to the food, I just want to share a few shots of "flower" arrangements at Bourbon Steak: it's cabbage! But how seriously gorgeous is this?

As Sangeetha and I caught up, I sipped on coffee served with warm milk (it was such an unexpected, but wonderful touch), and then came this:

HOT "BUTTERED" RUM: chairman's reserve, vanilla bean, ginger and allspice served in a latte glass with dulce de leche foam.

I'm usually a light weight and only use rum to make home-made vanilla. Plus, it was a bit too early for me to start drinking, but that dulce de leche foam was beyond amazing. I actually think foam is the wrong word for this as it was whipped, smooth and thick. I had to stop myself from eating the entire topping of this Hot "Buttered" Rum with a spoon. Instead, I mixed it into my coffee.

Then it was time for a heritage turkey burger stuffed with stuffing, brushed with mustard butter and served on a whole wheat bun. The bun was spread with garlic mashed potatoes and topped with cranberry relish.

And yes, this is still being served at Bourbon Steak after Thanksgiving.

I only could manage to eat a few bites of this burger and took the rest of it home. I am happy to report that the bun did not get soggy, the turkey burger did not dry out and the mashed potatoes were still fluffy by the time I came home. I did not even bother to reheat the burger before eating it.

To finish the photo shoot on a sweet note, we received BOURBON STEAK HOT CHOCOLATE: valrhona chocolate, maple with {in house made} marshmallows served in a latte glass.

And who will be the lucky person to come to lunch with me at Bourbon Steak in December? My brother!!! Dear Misha, you are in for a great treat.

PS: I'm happy to report that my photo of the burger was recently featured in Express Night Out (Page 19).

What to do with ground lamb? Recipe for Lamb Pizza with Peppers and Arugula

This is the second installment in the Lamb Supper Club series {one more to come}. To refreshen your memory, here's the first part: Grilled Butterflied Leg of Lamb.

I'm participating in this supper club hosted by the Tri-Lamb Group, a collaborative initiative of lamb producer organizations from the U.S., New Zealand and Australia which focuses on educating Americans about lamb. {Note: although I receive ingredients to make each recipe, there is no $$ compensation involved. And as always, all opinions are my own.}

Unlike my first supper club, which had a total attendance of 1, me, due to Hurricane Irene, this time around, my friends Cecilia and Laetitia joined me! Not only did they come over for dinner, but Cecilia brought carrot cake from Whole Foods, and Laetitia brought a bottle of sparkling wine: ♥ thoughtful guests.

This time I got to work with ground lamb in a recipe for Lamb Pizza with Peppers and Arugula. {Both the recipe and the ingredients were provided for me by the Tri-Lamb Group. You can find more information on lamb and other recipes here.}

Ingredients
1 package premade whole grain pizza dough (about 1 pound), thawed if frozen
2 tablespoons olive oil
1 pound ground lamb
1 medium shallot, chopped
2 garlic cloves, minced
1 tablespoon tomato paste {I added more to make the base more saucy}
1 tablespoon dried oregano
1/8 teaspoon salt
1/4 teaspoon pepper
1/4 cup sliced pepperoncini peppers
3/4 cup goat cheese crumbles
2 cups arugula

Directions

1. Preheat the oven to 450 degrees. Brush rimmed baking sheet with 1 teaspoon of oil. Using your hands spread dough over the entire length of the baking sheet and push the dough to the edges. Bake the pizza dough for about 5 minutes. Remove from the oven and set aside.

2. Heat 1 tablespoon oil in a large non-stick skillet over medium-high heat. {I actually used a stainless steal skillet and it worked out fine!} Add lamb, shallots, garlic, tomato paste, oregano, salt and pepper. Cook until the lamb has browned.

3. Brush the pre baked pizza crust with a teaspoon of oil. Evenly distribute the cooked lam mixture, top with pepperoncini and goat cheese and bake for about 15 minutes. Remove from the oven and top with arugula.

The two photos below were taken by Cecilia with her iphone. Please enjoy my super organized kitchen! {huh!}

Thoughts: this was an incredibly easy meal to put together. I loved the combination of lamb with vinegary pepperoncini, mild goat cheese and the freshness of arugula.

I still had a pound of lamb left over after the pizza supper club and the following day made Lamb Shepherd's Pie with it: I'll share the recipe next week.

For now, a few facts about lamb:

On average, 3-ounce portion of lamb contains
30% of your daily zinc, which contributes to growth and development and is necessary to heal wounds
25% of the daily value of niacin, necessary for processing nutrients and proper enzyme function
40% the daily value of vitamin B, which functions as a co-enzyme for many important metabolic reactions
47% of your daily value of protein, essential for adequate growth, immune function, muscle mainteance and healing wounds

But most importantly, it's versatile and tastes great!!

I hope you all have a good weekend. Please let me know if you've ever cooked with ground lamb and what you've made.

And before I sign off, I want to share with you one of my little dreams that has finally come true: TheKitchn included my Roasted Pear & Buttermilk Sorbet in their delicious links today!

I'm in great company with:
• Apple Cranberry Oatmeal Bake - Karma Cucina.
• Kabocha Shiruko - Humble Bean.
• Fresh Cauliflower Salad with Crispy Capers, Olives, Shaved Red Onion and Herbs with a Grainy Mustard - Lemon Vinaigrette - SnailsView.

What to serve for an Oscars party

Sunday is a big day for movie lovers: Oscars!!! Are you going to be watching? Do you care more about the outfits, who the stars bring along as their dates or who actually wins the Golden Statue?

Regardless, what to serve for an Oscars party must be a question on your minds!

Recently I was contacted by Nevin Martell who writes for Express and asked if they could use my Eggplant & Tomato Dip recipe for a feature about what food to serve during an Oscars party. Of course I said yes! Below is that feature: I'm in good company: the other recipes are by Chef Jeff Trunks of Acadianarestaurant.com and Chef Nora Pouillon of Noras.com. Of course my recipe has the least number of ingredients and steps...but I'm sure you would have guessed that. {Make sure to scroll down for a what I hope you'll find a fun pairing of Best Picture nominated films with food!}

Surely, the eggplant dip would not be enough. To make this a bit more fun, I decided to pair up my suggestions with the Best Picture nominees. Let me know what you think ;)

Black Swan: Black & White Chili: because you know, one swan is black and another one is white, and plus chili is a great one-pot meal to have when you have company! Don't forget to make cornbread! {Loved this movie!}
The Fighter: Fighting makes me think of bruises, which are blue, so why not make Blueberry & Coconut Scones? That'd be an incredibly easy and tasty dessert. {Great movie!}
Inception: This was quite a confusing (in a good way) movie, with many twists and turns, which might make your head spin...so why not have a Pama & Berry drink?
The Kids Are All Right: I absolutely hated this movie. I thought it was high on stereotypes and there was a lot of unnecessary s*x! But since it dealt partially with kids, how about egg in a hole? Who doesn't like those?
The King's Speech: I've got to watch this movie: heard so many good things about it. So, what's fit for a king or a queen? Nothing but red caviar, of course!
127 Hours: 127 hours is a very long time! It's enough time to make your own phyllo dough for these mushroom & ricotta filled phyllo triangles. Of course you can also simply buy phyllo at your local grocery store.
The Social Network: Facebook is all about reconnecting with old friends, right? Or is it to look up your frenemies and ex boyfriends!? :) I'd like to share with you a great party dip by my friend Jenny: Chicken dip with mayonnaise, cheese, salsa, etc. It's seriously good!
Toy Story 3: This is another movie I did not watch, but it looks colorful and fun! How about mini fritatas with broccoli and sun dried tomatoes? Plus, since these are individually made fritatas, you can customize them for each guest and they should be a hit with your kids!

True Grit: I did not see this movie either. But it has the word "grit" in the title, so you must go with polenta with mushrooms, bacon & onions. Before you start commenting, I know polenta is not exactly grits, but both are made from corn: close enough! Feel free to add shredded beef, pork or chicken to this dish.

Winter's Bone: I had to look up what this movie is about: poverty (at least partially). So what can you make on the cheap that will be a big hit? How about white bean & chipotle dip, hummus, or pickled red onions?
How are you planning on watching the Oscars? What food will you be serving? What movies are you rooting for?

What I've been busy cooking elsewhere

Tomorrow I'm flying to Boston to enjoy a mini solo vacation. I thought I'd leave you with some photos of what I've been cooking lately as part of my freelancing for Robyn Webb. Robyn comes up with all the recipes, chooses either kitchen tools or specialty ingredients, and then I cook the food and take photos. Here are some of my favorites.

Pear and walnut salad with Goldenberries: this salad definitely screams FALL! I love the combination of Gorgonzola and pears. You can do the same with apples and blue cheese. Toasted walnuts add a bit of a crunch, and the entire salad gets some surprising flavor from goldenberries. This was the first time I've tried goldenberries, which reminded me of a raisins, but somewhat crunchy and a bit sour.

Lemon cranberry scones: this is not the first scone recipe I've baked for Robyn, and as always, it's a success--lemon zest is always great in baking. Don't have cranberries? Add dried cherries or raisins. Don't like triangular shapes? Make the scones round by using a biscuit cutter. This is a great basic recipe you can use to adapt to your wants/needs. I'm yet to make a savory scone though.

Tuscan bean, eggplant & tomato salad: This salad reminds me of summer. Perhaps you can no longer make it with the farmers market tomatoes, but I liked the combination of the roasted eggplant, cucumbers and white beans. And I also love the dark nail polish ;) (yes, that's my hand)

Black bean and corn salad with lime: this recipe is from Robyn's 13th book. I did quite a bit of testing for it and this salad was on my list of favorites. Look at the colors! Using black beans, red peppers, corn (either fresh or frozen or even canned), this is a hearty salad to make any time during the year.

Pork loin with garlic and rosemary: not only do I get to make the recipes and take the photos, but I am also lucky to keep the kitchen tools. In this case, I got to keep the pretty pink silicone food loops.

And I'll leave you with grilled panzanella. The main idea in this recipe is to grill your bread before adding it to the salad. This way, the bread doesn't turn into mush as it mixes with the juicy tomatoes and the flavorful olive oil.

To all of you who get Monday off for Columbus Day, have a great 3 day weekend! I'm going to try my best to document all of my eating adventures in Boston and share them with you when I get back.

Capital Harvest on the Plaza: Come see my food demo this Friday!!!

When I met Ellen Gray (wife of Todd Gray and co-owner of Equinox) at the launch party for the Red Fruit Festival, she suggested that I should do a demo at the Capital Harvest on the Plaza. Not really having any details, I said sure.

A month later, I have a few more details :)

In fact, tomorrow (Friday, October 1st), I'll be demonstrating one of my recipes, Curry Butternut Squash Soup with Coconut Milk and Pistachios on the plaza of the Ronald Reagan Building at 12:30 pm. If you work in the area, please stop by, say hello and sample my cooking.

And since I have a full time job and can't take time off to do the prep for this recipe, Ellen said I'll get a "princess treatment"--Todd will do all the prep at the restaurant, and I'll just put things together on the spot. Who can refuse a princess treatment***? Not me!

Hope to see some of you tomorrow! Let's hope the weather cooperates.

*** Perhaps I earned the princess treatment after spending four hours at the kitchen of Equinox? I might write about that experience later ;)

Raw Beet & Arugula Salad with Goat Cheese Medallions

Yesterday I got up pretty early for a Saturday morning because I had exciting plans. Sylvie, Alejandra, Tammy and I were doing cooking demonstrations and giving out samples at the 14th & U farmers market in Washington DC.

The plan was to use produce available at the market, very little cooking, and have fun. Right away I decided to make a salad with raw beets and arugula and top it off with goat cheese. But I thought it'd be too simple. That's when Sylvie suggested I make goat cheese medallions! What are those? Read to find out. And be sure to check out Sylvie's, Alejandra's and Tammy's blogs for other great cooking ideas!

Raw Beet & Arugula Salad with Goat Cheese Medallions

Note: This recipe doesn't list exact amounts for any of the ingredients. I believe in playing with my food and using as little or as much of any ingredient as I want. I encourage you to do the same!

Ingredients
arugula
beets, peeled & thinly sliced
olive oil
lemon
salt & pepper to taste
dental floss (use the plain kind!)
egg
goat cheese
Panko crumbs
Optional: chopped herbs (I used chives)

Directions
1. In a bowl combine arugula and beets. Drizzle with olive oil and lemon juice. Season with salt and pepper.
2. Using a dental floss, cut goat cheese into ½ inch thick medallions.
3. In a small bowl beat an egg with some salt and pepper.
4. Dunk each goat cheese medallion in the egg mixture then coat with panko crumbs (Optional: feel free to add fresh herbs into your panko crumb mixture or use goat cheese with herbs already mixed in)
5. Heat olive oil in a saute pan. Add your goat cheese medallions and saute on each side until the panko crust is golden brown. Serve immediately on top of the salad.

Our demo went well! Everyone loved the food and some of our Twitter followers and friends came out to support us: THANK YOU!

These photos are from the salad I recreated in my kitchen today for breakfast. Enjoy!

And here is me yesterday at the demo (Thanks to Tammy for the photo!)

Destination DC + Foodbuzz = Staycation in DC

A few weeks ago I received an email from Foodbuzz letting me know that they've paired up with Destination DC and would like to fly me in to participate in the "Washington, DC: A Culinary Capital." I was confused: I actually live in DC area, but decided to email Foodbuzz back and see if I could still participate. Not only did Foodbuzz say yes, but they also agreed to let me stay in the posh Liaison hotel, conveniently located steps away from my work.
I was on cloud 9! Three days and three nights of eating out in some of the best DC restaurants--I was ready for an adventure. I packed my bags (including exercise clothes in order to use the gym at Liaison), watered my plants, and set out on staycation of the lifetime!

I was greeted in my hotel room with an information folder with a hand-written note from Rebecca and Chris (my "chaperones" and "tour guides" from Destination DC), some beauty products, potato chips (that were left uneaten) and a large salty cookie from Teaism (♥!).

After a hard day at work (sarcasm!), I decided to take a nap before meeting the rest of the group for dinner. Before I tell you about dinner, however, let me tell you that I fell in love with the black-out curtains in the room and how much water pressure there was in the shower: little things make me happy!

Where was dinner, you wonder!? At Art & Soul, where Art Smith, two-time James Beard Award Winning Chef (who was also Oprah's personal chef), creates dishes using fresh and seasonal ingredients with a Southern twist.

I've been to Art & Soul once for an alumni happy hour and was looking forward to trying out the restaurant's dinner menu. I wasn't expecting to see Art Smith, whom I saw the night before on Top Chef, where he was a guest judge. But as soon as I made my way to our private dining room, there he was! Art sat at the table with us for several hours talking about food, travel, love and everything else under the moon.

After meeting the rest of the people on the tour including bloggers, freelancers and journalists, it was time to order drinks. I chose Savannah: vodka, African Nectar Tea and peaches. The cocktail was pretty, but lacked in sweetness. (Speaking of pretty, my photographs came out horrid, so I'm posting some photos courtesy of Cathy from GastronomyBlog.)

While we were chatting and sipping our cocktails, we were treated to a few passed appetizers. One of my favorites was a mini sandwich with fried chicken: you can't get more Southern than that.

(and another favorite: seared tuna appetizer)

And then it was time for dinner. I wasn't playing around: I wanted steak. And steak I got: Bone in prime ribeye with crisp fingerlings, creamed spinach and black pepper marmalade. I wish you could see the plate: it could have easily fed 4 people: don't worry, I shared my food with others.

The meat was cooked to order: medium rare and had a luscious pink center. It was tender, satisfying and my only disappointment was that the hotel room did not have a refrigerator, so I could not take my leftovers back.  The potatoes were tender on the inside and crispy on the outside: just as I like them. And the creamed spinach...well, that was just a dream. If you can't get your kids to eat vegetables, try luring them in with the creamed spinach.

After we finished the main course, the table was filled with dessert: one of each from the menu. My favorite ones were chocolate terrine with espresso gelato and popcorn brittle and strawberry cheesecake made with whole wheat crust and balsamic molasses.

This was such a wonderful start to what promised to be a great staycation. Stay tuned for more posts about Ethiopian food, Jose Andres' Restaurants, dinners at Birch & Barley and Belga Cafe, a tour of Dupont Farmer's Market and brunch at Blue Duck Tavern.

I leave you with a photo of a rooftop swimming pool at Liaison.

Mango & Tomato Turns 2: Recipe Contest/Giveaway

Guess who is turning 2 this May? Mango & Tomato, that's who!

I can't believe I've been sharing my passion for food with all of you for the last two years.

So much has happened in the last two years. I had a chance to meet many amazing food bloggers, visit wonderful restaurants, try new products, make simple and delicious recipes and join Twitter!

Obviously I don't make every single recipe with mangoes or tomatoes, but I still absolutely love them.

Here are some photographs of wonderfully sweet champagne mangoes my friend Cindy brought for me and beautiful red and meaty heirloom tomatoes.

So here is where you come in to help me celebrate! I decided to have a recipe contest. The winner of the contest will win a $25 card to Whole Foods and a $25 card to Sur La Table.

RULES
1. Create an original recipe that includes both mangoes and tomatoes.
2. Post the recipe on your blog with at least one photograph and a link back to this post. {If you don't have a blog, you can still enter. Just skip this step and go to step #3.}
3. Email me the link to your post with your best photograph attached by June 30th. {Sorry, only those in the USA are eligible to win, but anyone can create recipes!}

The runner up will receive 25 Disposable, Biodegradable, Compostable and Sturdy Palm Plates in different shapes and sizes courtesy of MarxFoods. Thank you Justin!!! These are the plates you see in my photos. I received these plates to test and really like them. So far I used them as fruit and vegetable bowls and a place to keep my jewelry. But you can also bring them along for picnics: perfect for the summer. Obviously the runner up of my recipe contest will be receiving brand new plates ;)

Good luck to everyone! I cannot wait to see what you come up with.

Publicity & Mini Egg Frittatas with Broccoli and Sundried Tomatoes

A few weeks ago I received an email from a reporter at the Washington Post Express asking if I'd like to talk about brunch. Brunch is food. I love food. I love talking about food, so of course I said yes.

After our phone conversation, Katie Aberbach, the reporter, asked if it'd be ok for them to send over a photographer to take photos of my food and of me. Thus, last Sunday I cooked a few dishes, cleaned my apartment, bought flowers, got dressed up and made up and waited for Lawrence Luk to take my photos.

What you see below is a photo of my Mini Egg Frittatatas with Broccoli and Sundried Tomatoes on the cover of the Lookout section in Express and the article that mentions me and shows a few more photos of my food. If you are in DC area, pick up the free Express paper today! [Note: all the photos in the article are by Lawrence Luk. The photos of the recipe in this blog, are mine.]

You can read the article here.

And now, a recipe for Mini Egg Frittatas with Broccoli and Sundried Tomatoes
