New Things in the Kitchen

Happy Saturday!

This post has been at least  a month in the making. I want to share with you a few new things in my kitchen.

Here's a collection of some new dishes I picked up at Goodwill and Crate & Barrel Outlet, as well as a pretty place mat. You've already seen some of these appear in my food photographs. The flowered tea cup didn't have a matching saucer, but luckily I found one on eBay and ordered it.

If you follow me on Twitter, you know I've been contemplating hiring someone to do a tile backsplash in my kitchen. After some though--and an estimate--I changed my mind and decided to paint the walls...myself!

Here are some of the paint colors I was considering:

While I considered the colors, the saucer arrived from eBay; so now I have a complete cup & saucer set, and I love it.

I also purchased a beautiful handmade board:

And then I listened to Anna and went WILD and CRAZY and painted my kitchen a bright green color:

I've also added to my family of Le Creuset. Check out the new yellow oven on top:

And finally, a yellow oval baking dish by Emile Henry: thank you, parents!

Have you added something to your kitchen lately? What has been your favorite find?

New in my kitchen: yellow ramekins and a green pan

Hi,
No recipe today. Just wanted to share a few new things I've recently purchased for my kitchen (thanks Sylvie for shopping with me!).

The first, are 6 yellow ramekins: how adorable are they? I used them already to make panna cotta, but can see myself using them to bake eggs or making mini casseroles and desserts.

The second one is this Green Pan. I've seen it on HSN multiple times, but was very happy to find it at Marshalls. What really cracked me up, is that half of the things on the label are in Russian, my native language ;)

I used this pan to make omelets and cook chicken burgers: it did everything perfectly!

What are some of yours latest kitchen purchases?

Check in tomorrow for Daring Bakers Challenge reveal!

A few random things

I don't have a recipe for you today, just a few photos of things that have made me happy.

Last week I received a package in the mail with 3 different flavors of gourmet marshmallows from Plus Puffs Gourmet Marshmallows. Did you know that August 10th was National S'mores day? If you missed it, don't despair: turns out, August 30th is the Toasted Marshmallow Day! The three flavors I received are chocolate, caramel and lemon (pictured below). I had the best intentions of cooking with these marshmallows, but in the end just ate them as is and added a few to my morning coffee.

Over the weekend Jenn and I went to Macy's where I randomly bought these 4 plates: LOVE them! They are perfect for taking pictures because they are not too small or too large :) Aren't the colors great? And they match my red and yellow soup bowls! You'll definitely be seeing these in the future posts.

I also finally went to see Julie & Julia. I liked it despite that it was rather a long movie (plus, I kept on freaking out that I'll be late for salsa dancing...but I was just fine). A lot of things in the movie resonated with me: the joy of receiving comments on your blog, the relaxation that comes from cooking and sharing that food with others (I guess I don't do the sharing part often enough)...who knows, maybe one day there will be a cartoon called Mango & Tomato? :)

Stay tuned for Tomato/Olive/Basil salad and Daring Bakers!

New Dishes

I'm just back from Chicago! It was a lot of fun: good friends, good food, Second City, boat tour, and a lot of eating...wait, I already mentioned the food :)

While I'm getting my pictures ready to post, here are a few pictures of new dishes I bought in Chicago. Anna told me about a sister store to Crate & Barrel (CB2), and that's where I bought 3 new dishes: a black plate and two little white and green plates. How cute are they? Cannot wait to start cooking and using these plates to serve the food.

What Can You Buy for $10 at Sur La Table?

A few weeks ago I received an advertisement brochure from Sur La Table with a $10 gift card. Score!!!

I've actually been working part-time as a kitchen assistant at Sur La Table for the last 4 years and have a few gadgets from the store. Unfortunately, my kitchen is rather tiny and I simply cannot fit a big Kitchenaid mixer or ice cream machine. And so, I thought I'd buy a few little things instead.

I was hoping that I would be able to use my 40% employee discount toward the $10 gift card, but that wasn't the case. And so I wandered around the store for 20 minutes, mentally calculating how much money I could spend :)

Below are my purchases and the receipt: I only paid 42 cents out of my own pocket.

Who can't use an extra wooden spoon? And I simply love red in my kitchen, so the towel and scrubby will fit right in. Although, I will probably only use the towel as background for my photos. The 3 biscuit cutters will be useful for making cookies, raviolli, or maybe even cutting out perfectly shaped potato disks.

My New Dishes

Over the weekend I bought a few new "toys" for my cooking/blog hobby. I went to Crate & Barrel Outlet and bought a new place mat that reverses to a dark brown color, two napkins and a few white dishes.

I wanted to buy the smaller dishes so that I could fit the entire bowl/plate, etc into a square photograph. I also bought a rectangular dish with sides because I don't have one, and think it will come in handy.

Look out for these dishes in the upcoming posts!!!

Special "Thank you" to DeM for driving :)

Out with the Old, In with the New

Last week I was thinking about using my little cheapo mandoline to slice some potatoes, but never ended up doing it.

Then over the weekend, Cindy called and asked if I'd like her brand new OXO V-Slicer Mandoline. Of course I said yes! Compared to my mandoline, her's is like a Cadillac! I'm very excited to put it to use. Thanks!!!!
